Do you really need an international standard… or is legal compliance enough?

Differences between complying with legislation and being certified under international standards

Many food companies ask themselves this question.
And the answer is not always the same for everyone.

Complying with current food legislation is mandatory.
But obtaining certification under an international standard is a strategic decision.

What differentiates one from the other?

Legal Regulation

It establishes the minimum legal requirements (safety, labeling, hygiene, traceability).
It does not guarantee competitiveness, access to major retail chains, or international recognition.

International standards (GFSI, ISO 22000, BRCGS, IFS…)

They elevate your system to a globally recognized level.
They open commercial opportunities, improve your reputation and require a strong Food Safety and Quality culture.

They also require you to review, audit and continuously improve your processes.

If you operate locally, with few clients and no external requirements, legal compliance may be sufficient.

But if you want to grow, export, strengthen your position or attract major clients…

You need an international standard. Not only for compliance, but for positioning.
